While we can marvel at the incredible AI developments or debate AI strategy all day, it means nothing without the will to act.
In the AI Age, companies will make it or break it based on whether they start with the right footing.
The “who” they care about and the “why” it matters when disruption hits.
In other words, do they possess an indomitable sense of agency of their own fate OR do they have a weak heart that lets the market decide?
Tell me that, and I’ll tell you who prospers and who perishes when intelligence becomes abundant.
For those with agency, reinvention with AI is a decision; deliberate and determined.
For those without, disruption by AI is destiny; delivered and damned.
With a clear decision, the “what” vision and the “how” strategy will naturally follow.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
To adapt the adage: it is not the vision or strategy that matters most, it is the act of visioning and strategizing, continuously and with agility.
Without self-determination, executing any vision, if one even exists, will be feeble at best, futile at worst.
In sum, if your company has not committed to the decision to play-to-win with AI, it is doomed by default.
It is not too late to change that, but the window is closing fast.
According to Ray Kurzweil, one of the world’s most preeminent futurists, we will witness the same magnitude of change in the next ten years (2026–2035) as the last hundred years (1925–2025).
A weak will just wouldn’t cut it.
In a nutshell
- The most critical success factor for the AI Age is the collective human agency and determination of the company.
- The new leadership competency for the disrupted world is the capability to elevate, mobilize, and focus the organization’s collective human agency on what truly matters.
And at this time, nothing matters more than rising to meet the AI challenge.
P.S. While this is written from the organizational point of view, the lesson is equally applicable to an individual’s career. Personal agency is the biggest determinant of whether your career will flourish or flounder when AI pervades the mainstream workforce.
